France · short corridor

Removals from Maidstone to France.

M20 to Folkestone. Eurotunnel to Calais. Then straight onto the French road network.

France is the short corridor — the geographic-shortest international route from Kent. Maidstone is on the M20, the direct motorway to the Folkestone Eurotunnel terminal. From the Channel, the consignment runs straight onto the French autoroute network and on to your destination. Practical logistics, not premium framing.

The brief

A Maidstone → France move, plainly described.

Maidstone to France is the shortest of the four international corridors we run. The route is straightforward: load up in Maidstone, M20 east to the Folkestone Eurotunnel terminal, the Eurotunnel crossing to Calais, then onto the French motorway network and on to your destination. The vehicle that loads in Maidstone is the same vehicle that arrives in France — same crew, same lorry, door to door.

Working-family moves are the bulk of our Maidstone → France work. Pas-de-Calais and Picardy for households wanting a cross-Channel base. Brittany inland for affordable French village life. The Loire small towns for the family-with-school-age-children move. Aquitaine and inland Languedoc for the working couple downsizing from a Kent semi to a French village house. Each move is its own conversation; the route is the same.

France post-Brexit treats the UK as a third country for customs. Transfer-of-residence (ToR) relief covers household goods owned for at least six months by a householder transferring principal residence. We file the UK-side ToR1 with HMRC and the French-side declaration with Douanes on your behalf. You sign and provide the residency evidence. Customs handling happens at the French border once the consignment lands — we deal directly with Douanes, you get on with the move at the other end.

Who we move to France

Three Maidstone briefs we run for this corridor.

01

Working family to small-town France

Maidstone family — often working professionals or skilled trades — relocating to a small French town. Pas-de-Calais, Picardy, inland Brittany, or the Loire are the destinations we see most. Full-house dedicated consignment, M20 to Folkestone, Eurotunnel to Calais, onward to the village. Direct, no fuss.

02

Cross-Channel base move

Maidstone household with cross-Channel work or family ties — sometimes a second-home arrangement becoming the primary residence, sometimes a Kent-to-Pas-de-Calais move where the Eurotunnel is the lifeline back to the UK. Short corridor, frequent customs filings, the kind of route we run week in week out.

03

Mid-life downshift to rural France

Maidstone professional in their forties or fifties moving from a Kent town property to a French village — Brittany interior, the Languedoc countryside, an inland Aquitaine commune. The move is practical: a sensible French house for a sensible UK sale, the road run through Calais and south, customs handled, delivery to the address.

Where in France we go

The destinations Maidstone households actually move to.

The corridor is national but the destinations cluster around the working regions Maidstone families typically choose — not the tourist headlines.

Regions covered

  • Pas-de-Calais and Picardy (cross-Channel base, the working coast)
  • Brittany inland (affordable village life, the working west)
  • The Loire valley (small-town France, school-aged-family country)
  • Aquitaine and inland Charente (Cognac country, the working land)
  • Languedoc and inland Hérault (vineyard country, the slower south)
  • Normandy interior (the working hinterland behind the coast)
  • Burgundy and the Yonne (small towns, accessible rural)
  • Specific commune or village throughout — we work to the address, not to the brochure
Customs & paperwork

The paperwork for a Maidstone → France move.

Customs notes

  • France post-Brexit treats the UK as a third country for customs. Transfer-of-residence (ToR) relief covers household goods owned for at least six months by a householder transferring principal residence to France.
  • We file the UK-side ToR1 with HMRC and the French-side inventory and supporting paperwork with Douanes on your behalf. You provide the residency evidence pack — long-stay visa (visa de long séjour) for UK citizens post-Brexit, French address contract, and supporting documentation.
  • France is procedurally one of the simpler EU customs jurisdictions for ToR moves. Most consignments clear cleanly. If a query is raised at the French border we respond to Douanes directly on your behalf.

What you will need

  • A confirmed French address — long-stay rental, property purchase signed, or established residency contract
  • Long-stay visa (visa de long séjour) for the principal mover — for UK citizens this is the post-Brexit pathway
  • Inventory walked through at the Maidstone-side survey with current second-hand values
  • Pet AHC issued in the UK within the 10-day pre-travel window if a pet travels separately (we do not transport animals)
  • V5C if a UK-registered vehicle is shipping alongside under the same ToR claim
France-specific questions

Things we get asked about Maidstone → France.

Why is the Maidstone-to-France route quick on logistics?

Because Maidstone sits on the M20 motorway, which runs direct to the Folkestone Eurotunnel terminal. The road distance from Maidstone to Folkestone is short and the route is uninterrupted motorway. From Folkestone the Eurotunnel takes the consignment vehicle across to Calais; the French motorway network picks up directly on the other side. The route geography is genuinely shorter than running the same consignment from a London or Midlands origin.

Is the Eurotunnel cheaper than the Dover-Calais ferry for a removals consignment?

Depends on the consignment size and the schedule. For a single dedicated removals vehicle the Eurotunnel is typically the operational choice — predictable, weather-independent, vehicle stays loaded. The Dover-Calais ferry remains an alternative for some consignments and we will use it where it suits. The written quote sets out which option applies to your move.

What happens at Calais on the French side?

The customs paperwork is filed before the consignment crosses; the formal customs handling happens at the French border. We deal with Douanes directly — you do not need to be present, you do not need to attend. Once cleared the vehicle is on the French motorway network and on the way to your destination. The customs side runs in the background.

Do we have to be at the Maidstone-side load-out and the French delivery?

At the Maidstone load-out yes — you sign the inventory, confirm what is travelling. At the French delivery yes — someone has to be present at the destination to direct the unload. In between (the M20 drive, the Eurotunnel, the French motorway run, the customs handling) you do not need to be involved.
